The Athletic is an Android app in the Sport category, published by The Athletic Media Company. It brings together sports news, expert commentary, and audio content. The app is distributed as an APK under the package name com.theathletic, and the listed version is 13.154.0 with a listed size of 43M.
Coverage centers on American sports and the leagues and teams that users of the app tend to follow first. The app is built around reading, following, and listening, with customization options for both news and podcasts.
Expert Analysis and Commentary
The app includes a staff of analysts and commentators who cover specific sports. Their role is to address difficult or disputed moments that can occur during a match, when questions arise about the decisions of players or officials. Users can turn to these professionals for explanations that help them understand such situations more clearly.
Sports Categories and Leagues
American sports form the main focus. Followers of baseball, basketball, or rugby can use the app to track leagues and teams. Competitions such as the NBA for basketball and the MLB for baseball are available to follow. The app provides access to more than a thousand news stories each day across various topics.
News Speed and Accuracy
Publishing on the app places importance on both speed and accuracy. Quick delivery of current information is treated as a requirement, since delays relative to competing apps can affect the user base. Accuracy is also emphasized because reporting mistakes can spread misinformation and cause harm. Both qualities are presented as necessary for attracting users.
Reading Experience and Customization
Users can approach the news they want through a customized experience. News categories can be adjusted so that filtered stories appear, and the main screen can be set to show only the sport a user cares about. The interface layout can also be changed for a different reading feel.
Podcasts
Podcast channels are included alongside the written coverage. These channels are varied and organized into categories for particular sports. Users can bookmark favorite sports and listen during hands-free activities. Podcast listening can be customized, and the app offers exclusive content in this area. Bookmarks also trigger notifications when new content appears from a favorite channel, so listeners can tune in without missing an episode.
