Star Roam is an education app developed by Findout World Inc. It presents the night sky as a unified view that brings together planets, moons, comets, asteroids, nebulae, and galaxies. The app is intended for users who want to learn about the night sky without prior astronomy knowledge.
The listing describes a sky tour that works in real time regardless of where the user is. Astronomical information is supplied for each star, and the app includes constellation interpretations from several cultures.
Astronomical Objects in the Sky View
The unified sky view incorporates planets and moons, comets and asteroids, and nebulae and galaxies. The source states that there are almost two million different types of galaxies, and that nebulae can be discovered there. Reading the astronomical information supplied for each star is one way to learn more about the objects shown.
Time Travel and Location
Star Roam includes a time-travel feature for experiencing the night sky in a variety of ages and locations. The app gives users an overview of the past and the future. The night sky can be observed whenever and wherever the user wishes, such as the early morning hours near the North Pole or the evening after tomorrow in a backyard. The speed of the presentation can also be altered to watch a sky map of the stars and planets move by quickly.
Automatic Tracking
An automatic tracking option is available. When the app is configured to perform auto-tracking, it uses the gyroscope sensor in the phone to display the region of the sky toward which the device is currently oriented. This is described as making it simple to focus on particular constellations and stars.
Observation Experience
The app gives users a chance to engage in observation, with many different natural places to choose from. The sky view is based on a simulation of the surface and atmosphere that considers the actual effects of dawn, sunset, and atmospheric refraction. This is expected to make the sky view appear and feel more realistic and to improve the overall user experience.
Constellations Across Cultures
Star Roam includes information on many cultures' interpretations of various constellations. Starlores from Western, Arabic, Boorong, Chinese, Indian, Kamilaroi, Macedonian, Ojibwe, and Romanian cultures are included in this collection. When viewed from above, their structures and the lines that make them up become more apparent.
